HVAC | Pioneering Spirit

Pioneering Spirit is the world’s largest construction vessel, designed for the single-lift installation and removal of large oil and gas platforms and the installation of record-weight pipelines. Designed entirely in-house by the Swiss-based Allseas Group, the 382 m long, 124 m wide vessel was built in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, and commenced offshore operations in August 2016.

Ventilation TLS Beams

The vessel’s topsides lifting system (TLS) consists of sixteen lifting beams. Each beam is equipped with a high-tech Heinen & Hopman ventilation system in order to provide the equipment with the required cooling and ventilation for proper and continuous operation.

Design Conditions

The following design conditions were requested:

Outside-Inside Summer

Outside: 45˚C/60%RH
Inside: 52˚C

Outside-Inside Winter

Outside: -15˚C/15%RH
Inside: 0˚C

HVAC TLS Control Cabin Rooms

Heinen & Hopman also supplied the HVAC system for the sixteen TLS control cabins. The HVAC system is powered, controlled and monitored by one dedicated HVAC control & starter panel with redundant PLC and redundant power supply. Each control cabin is equipped with two redundant air conditioning units, taking care of the cooling requirements, and one cooling water system taking care of the cooling requirements of the TLS beam inverter and brake resistor systems.

Design Conditions

The following design conditions were requested:

Outside-Inside Summer

Outside: 45˚C/50%RH
Inside: 30˚C

Outside-Inside Winter

Outside: -15˚C/30%RH
Inside: 5˚C
