HVAC | HERE COMES THE SUN

HERE COMES THE SUN is the first AMELS 272 from the Limited Editions range. It is the largest AMELS yacht built to date and features exterior design by Tim Heywood. The large volume 2,827 gross tonnage over six decks features a modern, relaxed 1,400 square metres Winch Design luxury interior, inspired by natural tones and materials.

A perfect climate: indoors and outdoors

In order to achieve a perfect indoor climate onboard HERE COMES THE SUN, a Heinen & Hopman heating, ventilation and air conditioning system was installed. An outside mist system, serving the bridge deck aft and sundeck aft was installed to even assure owners’ and guests’ comfort outdoors.

Design conditions

AMELS requested the following design conditions for the air conditioning installation:

Summer conditions

Outside: 35˚C/75%RH
Inside: 22˚C/55%RH

Winter conditions

Outside: -5˚C/80%RH
Inside: 22˚C/35%RH

Air Conditioning

All living quarters and interior spaces are provided with air conditioning. The AC installation’s air handling units are cooled by means of chilled water from the chilled water unit in the pump room.

In general three types of air conditioning systems were installed:

  • System serving owners related spaces including guest rooms and public spaces. This is a low pressure system with warm water reheat and variable air volume control (VAV).
  • System serving crew area. These area’s are conditioned by means of low pressure with warm water reheat.
  • System serving service spaces which includes fan coils with electric chill chaser.

The warm water heaters are fed with cooling water energy from the generators, called waste heat. This waste heat system saves a lot of electrical energy compared to conventional electric air heaters.

Ventilation

All sanitary spaces are provided with forced exhaust ventilation and all stores and machinery compartments are provided with forced ventilation. Other areas and tanks are provided with vent pipes or openings for natural ventilation. A slight overpressure in the accommodation prevents contaminated air or smells from entering the spaces.
