The republic of Singapore is a city-state in Southeast Asia and the world’s only island city-state. The country lies at the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia. Despite lacking natural resources and a hinterland, the country developed rapidly as an Asian Tiger economy, based on external trade and its workforce.
Singapore port is one of the largest in the world and is the top bunkering (ship refueling) port in the world. PSA International and Jurong port handle port operations: These two companies collectively operate six container terminals and three general-purpose terminals around Singapore. Both port operators work closely with the maritime and port authority of Singapore (MPA).
Singapore’s shipbuilding industry is technically advanced and specialized in efficient ship building and ship-repair. There are several large shipbuilding companies in Singapore, for example Keppel Marine and Sembcorp Marine. Both companies have several yards, each with extended facilities and specialized workers.
An important part of Singapore’s marine industry is the offshore segment. Keppel Marine and Sembcorp Marine are leading manufacturers of offshore vessels and offshore equipment . The companies are specialized in the fabrication of jack-up units, semi-submersible rigs, floating production systems and other advanced vessels such as drill-ships.
